I hit them with a ban hammer and say "MOVE ALONG HIPPIES!"
But really, it's hard to deal with spammers, especially if you host your own forum. I have always been on ProBoards and they have some spam protection measures, however it also closes off the membership welcomeness you should get. I have always had staff required to login day and some at night, like day shift, etc. I'm pretty organized when it comes to my staff members, that's a key in dealing with spammers. Spammers are spammers, there's not alot to get rid of them other then either restricting boards, or having staff.

I personally feel that spammers are really boring and actually if the so called spammer is a bot
I try to get rid of it using difficult questions. The real problem is that they usually attack forum software and not self-made softwares which utilize the latest technology. |

The only thing I've done is IP ban them. Unfortunately, they keep coming. There's no way someone can constantly keep an eye out on the board and block every single spammer that comes on. I know I have commitments, and I can't possibly sit there all day and watch as bots come crawling around.

There is no doubt that spammers are very annoying and they make the lives of webmasters very miserable. I had to deal with spammers a lot when I first launched my forum, but after I started to use strong captcha the problem stopped.

I had to deal with spammers a lot when I first launched my forum, but after I started to use strong captcha the problem stopped. It's not just the bot spammers that's the problem. I belong to a board that has people coming in to post referral codes for gift sites. It's all that they do, and it gets really annoying after a while. I wouldn't mind it if they come in to post some other stuff on top of it.

Automated spammers are stopped by a really good anti-spam registration question plugin I have while manual spammers cannot be stopped, our mods make sure that they are banned and all posts deleted

I don't care about spammers after awhile of banning them: no point
in getting stressed or worried over them... |

Spammers are Spammers. You keep feeding them then they keep growing. Feeding as in banning. They have IP changers so, staff is really your only back up.

At first, I would determine whether it's a bot and go from there by simply banning the IP (if the forum software allows me). If it's an actual person spamming, I'd probably warn them not to do it anymore the first time. Then I would hand out infractions according to the forum rules. And if the behavior was continued, I would ban them for x amount of time. Kind of the 3rd strike you're out, deal.

And ask the targeted people (members) to ignore them altogether and to stop reacting or over-reacting to whatever they (the trolls, flamers) say. |

That doesn't always work. A "friend" of mine once got like 20 of his a**hole friends to spam my old forum to the point where I had to shut it down because I couldn't keep up with 50-60 insulting replies daily.....

It all depends really. I haven't really ever had a problem with human spammers but I have had quite a bit of trouble spambots in the past, though a simple IP ban eases the situation.

I know it's hard for members to ignore (or to not take the bait), but yeah, that's the best solution/policy for any forums that's got too many of them. You can't ban/get rid of them anyways yes? So just ignore them and let them be. |
