So yeah, I'm planning to watch the modern version of "Romeo & Juliet"? Adapted into a movie.
Anyone's going to watch this?

No, because really I hate Romeo and Juliet. The whole story is just...frustrating, and I hated it and never wanted to read it every again. However, I do enjoy Shakespeare when it comes to stories like Macbeth and Twelfth Night. I just can't stand the ones dealing with stupid teenagers falling so "in love" that they'd kill themselves, or pretend to kill themselves. xD

Yeah I agree, it could be frustrating and even maddening at times, but I enjoy sappy and romantic
stuff sometimes. I love crying during a movie/play. I love going to plays: I've gone to the Romeo & Juliet's play (in theatre) many times with my family or friends. Plus, I think Juliet's character is cute. |

Yeah, I am the opposite. I don't cry or enjoy sappy romances, so it's one of the reasons I really did not enjoy the dynamics between the two main characters. I do like a lot of other plays by Shakespeare, but this one is so played out, so overdone, especially as an English major who had to read a lot of his work.

Oh yeah, in my Chinese class, I had to compare similar stories in Chinese (written in Mandarin)
Or Romeo and Juliet type of stories in Chinese/French literature. I had to explain to the class what was different from the English Romeo/Juliet, what wasn't. Why was it alike and etc... It was very interesting, so I had to re-read and re-analyze them (the 2 plays) so many times myself to be able to explain it to the students properly. |

I think I've read Romeo and Juliet a good 20+ times for school-related assignments and other curriculum. When you move a lot, and go to school for six years after high school, you get exposed to the same thing over and over again quite a bit. However, I was never a fan of this particular play anyway.

Yeah, it really does. It's like when I had to read Of Mice and Men a handful of times because I moved schools so much. However, I actually like that story. xD

What about Shakespeare in love then? Do you like it? I kinda do...
And Romeo & Juliet is more about why families shouldn't hold it against each other. |

No, I dislike romance in general. I prefer more of his comedies and his tragedies.

Not really thrilled about Rome and Juliet but if a friend invites me I'd watch it in some years.
It is a very know story yet reading it was a different thing. It is good tragedy but the problem is that I could never buy in the book that they were really in love, it all moved too quickly from the 'we met' to the 'we're destined to be together forever'. I feel this story cast unnecessary shadow to other pieces of work from Shakespeare that are apparently better. I think I read a few but it was so long ago and while on school, not my choice, so I didn't retain as much. I am sure the praise the author receives is deserved, and surely there is more to him than just Romeo and Juliet. |
